Doug Wimbish (Frankfurt 2006)

Doug Wimbish (born September 22, 1956) is a bass player, primarily known for his studio work for the rap/hip hop label Sugarhill Records and his membership of the rock band Living Colour. He has played for a vast range of artists, including Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, Madonna, George Clinton, Paula Cole, Bomb the Bass, Depeche Mode, Joe Satriani, Mos Def and Tarja Turunen. Wimbish is considered to be a pioneer in hip hop bass playing and in the use of bass effects, alternate tunings and extended hand techniques.

Life[link]

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Wimbish started playing guitar at the age of 12 and switched to bass guitar at the age of 14. In 1979 he was hired together with guitarist Skip McDonald and drummer Keith LeBlanc to form the house rhythm section for Sugarhill Records. Although they did not play on the Sugar Hill Gang's famous song "Rapper's Delight" (the rhythm tracks for this song were played by the group Positive Force), they did play on many other famous tracks, for example "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel, "New York, New York" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and "Apache" by the Sugarhill Gang.

Together with McDonald and LeBlanc, Wimbish headed to London in 1984 and started working with producer Adrian Sherwood and formed the group Tackhead. Together with Tackhead and as a session bassist, Wimbish found himself in demand as a bass player for many artists and was considered as a permanent sideman for the Rolling Stones after the departure of bassist Bill Wyman in 1993; although the job went to Darryl Jones, Wimbish later played on the Stones' 1997 album Bridges to Babylon. Wimbish joined Living Colour in 1992 (he replaced Muzz Skillings, who left the band) to tour and record the album, Stain.

Living Colour disbanded in 1995, and Wimbish joined his old Sugar Hill Gang partners to play in Little Axe, an ambient-dub project initiated by Skip 'Little Axe' MacDonald.

After the disbandment of Living Colour, Wimbish went back to London to continue his career as a studio bassist. In 1999 he formed the drum and bass group Jungle Funk together with drummer Will Calhoun and percussionist/vocalist Vinx. Also in 1999, Wimbish solo album Trippy Notes for Bass was released. In 2000, Living Colour was reformed with Wimbish as the bass player and toured in the United States and in Europe (original bassist Muzz Skillings was not part of the line up). In 2001 and 2002 Wimbish recorded and played with rapper Mos Def in a band called BlackJack Johnson, which also featured members of P-Funk and Bad Brains in the lineup.

Wimbish also formed Head>>Fake, a drum and bass project with drummer Will Calhoun. They released a CD, In The Area. In 2005 they started recording new songs. The recording took place in Brussels, Belgium and was followed by an extensive European tour. The CD has never been released. A Head>>Fake DVD was released in 2008. It features a recording of a Head>>Fake concert in Prague.

In 2008 Doug Wimbish' second solo album was released through Enja Records: CinemaSonics.

Doug has also featured on four Little Axe albums with Alan Glen on Harmonica.

Keith Leblanc (Little Axe concert in Vienna, 2009)

Keith Leblanc is an American drummer and record producer, and is a member of the bands Little Axe and Tackhead.^[1][2]

His record "Malcolm X: No Sell Out," was one of the first sample-based releases. His career started out on Sugar Hill Records recording with hip hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash and Melle Melle, and released several singles on and was a studio musician for Tommy Boy Records. He now has his own record label on which he still releases music, samples records, and experiments.

Darryl Lenox is an American Comedian who has made appearances on Comedy Central, BET, and A&E.

Early life[link]

Darryl was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. When Darryl reached the age of 16, he set out to find out more about his lineage. What he discovered was that his biological father was a pimp and a crack dealer in Seattle, Washington. He considers the meeting with his father to be one of the most powerful and life-dictating experiences of his life. After meeting his father, Darryl decided to stay in Seattle until 1993. He then moved to Los Angeles for nearly a year. He finally ended up in Surrey, British Columbia in February 1994. Lenox made Canada his home for 12 years.^[1]

Early career[link]

Darryl has said “You know you are doing something right when you can cry about it.” He feels like comedy is his calling. Most of his early career standup was performed in Canada. In 2005, following the Montreal Comedy Festival, Darryl went to Florida with the intention of returning to Canada. With no work permit to return to Canada, he was caught by the border patrol and excluded from the country for a year leaving all of his belongings in his Canadian apartment. Darryl ended up in LA.^[2]

Lenox has been performing in comedy clubs throughout the United States and Canada since the early 90's. Some of his career accomplishments include opening for Chuck Berry and Maxi Priest, Winner of Best New Play at Vancouver Fringe Festival,and Winner of Seattle Comedy Competition.

Humanitarian[link]

Having been afflicted with deteriorating eyesight since his youth, Darryl Lenox quickly shrugs off any notion of self-pity. He quips, “I can’t see two feet in front of me, but I can see tomorrow.” Successful eye surgery in Vancouver has restored some of his vision, but more importantly it served to sharpen his humanitarian focus. By partnering with Third World Eye Care Society (TWECS), Darryl is helping to offer treatment solutions to the visually impaired in third-world countries around the world. The mission of TWECS is close to Darryl’s heart: desperately needed eye exams and donated eyeglasses for those in need. Darryl believes that poverty should never stand between the less fortunate and a better quality of life through better vision.^[3]

Denis Kitchen (born 27 August 1946) is an American underground cartoonist, publisher, author, and agent from Wisconsin, and the founder of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Early life[link]

Kitchen grew up in Wisconsin, attending William Horlick High School, Racine, where he cofounded and edited Klepto, an unofficial school paper, also contributing stories and illustrations to the paper. He continued this interest at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where in 1967 he cofounded and served as art director for the humor magazine Snide, also supplying cartoons.

Publishing beginnings[link]

In 1969 Kitchen decided to self publish his comics and cartoons in the magazine Mom’s Homemade Comics, inspired in part by Bijou Funnies and Zap Comix. The selling out of the 4000 print run inspired him further, and in 1970 he founded Kitchen Sink Press (initially as an artists' cooperative)^[1][2] and launched the underground newspaper The Bugle-American, with Jim Mitchell and others.^[3] Under the name of the Krupp Syndicate, he syndicated comic strips to almost 50 other underground and college newspapers.^[4] In addition to the Milwaukee artists like himself, Mitchell, Bruce Walthers, Don Glassford and Wendel Pugh, Kitchen began to publish works by such cartoonists as Howard Cruse, Trina Robbins and S. Clay Wilson, and he soon expanded his operations, launching Krupp Comic Works, a parent organization into which he placed ownership of Kitchen Sink Press and through which he also launched such diverse ventures as a record company and a commercial art studio.

Funding defenses[link]

Kitchen's founding of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund occurred in 1986, after comic store manager Michael Correa was charged with possession and sale of obscene material. Since two of the works cited in the case as obscene were published by Kitchen Sink Press, Kitchen felt some responsibility for Correa's predicament, and so he set about raising funds for the defense of Correa, who saw his conviction overturned on appeal. Kitchen used surplus funds to incorporate the fund as a non-profit charitable organization in 1990. Kitchen served as the fund's president from its inception until 2004, noting on his retirement from the board that "The challenges facing comics are different from when I founded the Fund ... I think it's fitting that the generation directly facing these challenges ... should be the ones standing up to them." ^[5]

After the press[link]

Although Kitchen Sink Press collapsed in 1999, subsequent ventures have seen Kitchen establish himself as an art agent, handling the estates of both Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzman amongst others through his company Denis Kitchen Art Agency. He is also a partner with Judith Hansen in Kitchen & Hansen Agency, LLC, which serves as a literary agency for Will Eisner's estate.

On June 10, 2006 at the Mocca Art Festival in NYC, Kitchen announced the formation of a new company with partner, book designer John Lind. Their company Kitchen, Lind & Associates serves a dual role as agency and book packager.^[6]

Kitchen is also working with Boom! Studios to release old Kitchen Sink Press titles as part of the company's imprint called Boom! Town.^[7]

He is also releasing The Oddly Compelling Art of Denis Kitchen through Dark Horse, a collection of his art and reminiscences of his time in the comics industry.^[8]
