Fat Albert, He-Man, Star Trek and The Archies were all Filmation cartoons! (Interview)
Who could forget the excitement of getting out of bed early and planting him or herself in front of the TV to watch "The Archies," "Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids," "Star Trek," "Groovie Ghoulies" and all the rest? It was only today as -- a-hem -- an adult that I discovered so many of my favorite Saturday morning epics from the late 1960s and early '70s were a product of Filmation Studios and its head, Lou Scheimer. Heck, Filmation even put "Shazam!" the live-action adventures of Billy Batson and Captain Marvel on the air! What I wouldn't give to have that on DVD today -- although I'm sure it couldn't possibly hold a candle to my memory of it. Andy Mangels, my guest today, helped write the autobiography, Lou Scheimer: Creating the Filmation Generation. Getting my hands on a copy of the book, which is jam-packed with photos -- many black and white, the way I originally watched Filmation shows as a kid -- was a thrill and a half. If you remember these shows as fondly as I do and what to hear some great stories behind them, I encourage you to order a copy of this book. Palm Beach political cartoonist David Willson tweaks the rich & famous equally! (Interview)
Many of the rich and famous in Palm Beach, Florida, live their lives like cartoon characters, so it's fortunate that the local newspaper, the Palm Beach Daily News, has a political cartoonist capable of capturing them in the four-color glory of their natural environment. The only real wonder is why David Willson hasn't been run out of town by pitchfork and torch-bearing villagers. Surely the good folks of Palm Beach know he's laughing at them, not with them? Whatever the answer, the rest of us are lucky that Willson has continued to expose the peculiarities that are unique to this pampered, cloistered community. And that his beautiful cartoons have finally been collected in a best-of volume, Billionaires and Butterfly Ballots. What is Mr. Media® Interviews? At Andertoons, Mark Anderson is the cartoonist in charge of yuks! (Interview)
Mark Anderson's burning desire since graduating college in 1997 has been to be a cartoonist. Unfortunately, he hit the market just before the traditional print publishing world fell? jumped? leaped? was pushed? off a cliff. Within a few short years of Anderson's arrival on the professional scene, the newspaper and magazine opportunities for selling his wares went the way of Thelma & Louise. But Anderson was driven to find a way. He worked a day job to pay the bills and spent his pre-dawn and late-night hours drawing comics for whatever customers he could find -- magazines and newspapers, sure, but also greeting card companies, trade publications, corporations and websites. I "get" Mr. Anderson because I've taken a similar route as a freelance writer. I always wanted to write but never limited myself to just pursuing newspaper and magazine assignments. I kept an open mind to corporate reports, scriptwriting, copywriting and advertising, all of which eventually led me to books and Mr. Media. Today, Anderson has broadened his horizons -- and his Andertoons.com website -- to include a subscription model for businesses that see humor as another way to their customers' hearts. Hey, world! Docu director Mark Cousins has you covered in The Story of Film! (Interview)
Mark Cousins' new 15-hour documentary, The Story of Film: An Odyssey, offers a perspective that is dramatically different from a Hollywood-centric view of the celluloid universe. He packs this surprisingly fast-moving epic with film clips and filmmaker interviews from around the world, from Bernardo Bertolucci, director of The Last Emperor, to American Buck Henry, writer of The Graduate. In between, he visits sites of film history on every continent and takes a global view of an industry that Americans incorrectly think of as all theirs. As a student of cinema myself -- my fraying degree is in film studies from the University of Florida, where I studied everything from New Wave French and German cinema to the entire Charlie Chaplin catalog -- I've become accustomed to movie travelogues that will be 80 percent Hollywood with a little French, German and Japanese dropped in for flavor. But in The Story of Film: An Odyssey, which was just released as a DVD set, Cousins give the rest of the world its due. You'll watch this documentary and be introduced to the brilliance of many filmmakers whose names and titles you probably never heard of before. Shred this! It's the Guitarcadia show with Xander Demos! (Interview)
Xander Demos' guitar stylings remind me of the 1980s. In that era, I was a newspaper rock critic, listening to hour upon hour of heavy metal guitar solos and hair nation bands. And I liked it! So hearing his work took me back to what was, for me, a simpler time of cueing up a record album or cassette and sitting back with nothing better to do than listen to some wango tango grooves and blazing hot licks. And yes, we actually talked like that. Those were fun days when I didn't need to multitask or always use my time wisely. So I appreciate a good turn down memory lane. But this young man, Xander Demos, is not a nostalgia act; he's a working musician, straight out of Pittsburgh, playing in not one but three different bands: the Xander Demos Band, Into The Arena, and Sabbath Judas Sabbath. Okay, the last is a Black Sabbath/Judas Priest cover band, so maybe there is a little nostalgia at work here, but you get the idea. I invited Xander to join us tonight to play a few tunes and talk about life as a working musician at the start of the twenty-first century. In The Lawyer's Lawyer, novelist James Sheehan exposes his Florida roots! (Interview)
James Sheehan, author of bestselling novels such as The Mayor of Second Avenue and The Law of Second Chances, is a neighbor of mine. We talk often about our respective projects and the ups and downs of writing books. About two years ago, I was honored to get an early look at an upcoming Sheehan story in development and earlier this year got to see his latest, The Lawyer's Lawyer, in galley form. If you were a fan of Jim's first two books and the entanglements of fictional Florida attorney Jack Tobin, you'll be pleased to know he returns to action in The Lawyer's Lawyer. And if you've never read Sheehan before but like the high-octane thrillers of John Grisham, Michael Connelly, James Grippando and Scott Turow, it will be well worth your time and money to order a few of Mr. Sheehan's fine works. Musicians Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc and Adam Falcon rehearse live! (Interview)
Today, Mr. Media has been invited into the Hartford, Connecticut, loft of bass guitarist Doug Wimbish, where a remarkable rehearsal will take place right before our eyes. Joining us are Wimbish and his friends, drummer Keith LeBlanc and guitarist Adam Falcon. Separately (and sometimes together) these three men have worked with the Rolling Stones, Living Colour, Whitney Houston, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, the Original Sugar Hill Rhythm Section, Melle Mel, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, TackHead, Jeff Beck, Al Green, Billy Idol, George Clinton, and James Brown! You can see even more of Doug Wimbish in March and April when Living Colour reunites once more to tour the United States and Europe in celebration of the 25th anniversary of its landmark LP, Vivid, being released. The guys will even perform a pair of songs -- "Stealing (In The Name of the Lord)" and "Too Late" — so stick around for that! Watch or listen to more interviews like this one at www.mrmedia.com . Comedian Darryl Lenox might be this, probably won't be that! (Interview)
It takes a while for it to sink in on the viewer that the title of his Starz comedy special, 'Blind Ambition,' really does refer to Darryl Lenox himself. He is blind in his left eye and has a limited field of vision in the right. So what though? The man is funny. He will make you laugh at things you didn't know were funny. And they probably wouldn't be funny coming from someone else. Lenox has such a calm demeanor that you may not feel the first punch lines as they land but pretty soon you'll be laughing too hard to care. And when you see his act -- live or on TV -- the part I suspect you'll remember most is when he offers up things that "might work—but probably won't." Underground comix legend Denis Kitchen comes up for air! (Interview)
Everything I've ever learned about Denis Kitchen—both before we met and became friends in 2002 or since—has always been compelling. This is a rare creative animal who has thrived in roles both creative and corporate, even if he met the latter challenge kicking and screaming all the way home each day. Kitchen—and his company, Kitchen Sink Press—were present at the birth of the underground comix movement in the 1960s and '70s. He is responsibly for boosting the careers of talents as extremely different as Robert Crumb and Will Eisner—and everyone in-between. Over the last year, Kitchen has been more productive than he has been in decades, co-authoring a retrospective of Harvey Kurtzman, the first editor of Mad magazine, called The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics, with Paul Buhle; a history of underground comix called Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix, with James Danky; and producing a look back at his own career, The Oddly Compelling Art of Denis Kitchen, with text by Charles Brownstein. And just yesterday, I saw a press release for an even newer collection of his work, Denis Kitchen's Chipboard Sketchbook. That hair! Those eyes! That voice! Josey Milner is pretty enough! (Interview)
it's hard to believe anybody ever looked at Josey Milner and said out loud that she wasn't pretty enough for anything. And yet that's the title of her new country single, "Am I Not Pretty Enough?" That's the thing about great songs and other forms of literature, of course: they make us face something personal, something that can sting, but something that hopefully, eventually, we rise above. Tonight, I'm pleased to welcome this young, up-and-coming singer to our show. Two things you should know about Josey: one, she's from the tribal lands called Kansas City, and 2) she's a former rodeo queen. Must admit, I've never interviewed a rodeo queen. All that and she's going to honor us with a couple songs, too. Order Dead Flowers from Amazon.com: amzn.to What is Mr. Media® Interviews? Rock photographer Bob Gruen on his time working with Ike & Tina Turner! (Interview)
I couldn't help but be interested in watching Nadya & Bob Gruen's new film, Ike & Tina: On the Road 1971-72. It's a hybrid of a classic concert footage interposed with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue on the road, plus extremely rare footage of the Turners at home with their children. I wouldn't call it a documentary, per se; it lacks a narrative or even a narrator. But the presence of a young, raw Tina Turner -- Annie Mae Bullock -- makes it thoroughly compelling. I love this woman; I guess I always have. She's so dynamic, so explosive on the stage and yet so sweet and unassuming in the rest of her life. If you're as fascinated by Ike & Tina as an act -- and Tina as a person -- as I am, you must get this film. And wait till you hear the story behind it. Star Trek history gets the Robert Greenberger treatment! (Interview)
Because ST:TCUH -- I'm sorry, Star Trek: The Complete Unauthorized History -- was written by the esteemed Bob Greenberger, I was curious to have a look. Based on his history both inside and outside of comics and sci-fi fandom, it seemed likely he of all people could find some genuine nuggets of unique Trekness. And let me tell you—this book sparkles with Star Trek goodness and flashes of wit on every page. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but tells a good story within a story of a story. I've read a lot about Star Trek and its creator, Gene Roddenberry over the years. I saw classical Trek when it was originally broadcast on NBC in the late 1960s, found with my old man when he thought I watched too many reruns in the '70s, and dutifully watched every episode of every series since then from The Next Generation to my personal favorite, Enterprise. And, of course I've seen all the films, including JJ Abrams' brilliant re-imagining of the entire premise. So believe me when I tell you that the pages of Bob Greenberger's new book radiate freshness like a just born Tribble, whether he's found an obscure factoid or entertaining photo of a rare Star Trek toy or set piece. Whether you, yourself, love Star Trek -- or know someone who does -- Star Trek: The Complete Unauthorized History should be on your holiday shopping list. Milt Larsen built Hollywood's Magic Castle--with interference from Invisible Irma! (Interview)
We can all name the best-known magicians, of course, starting with Harry Houdini and on through David Copperfield. There have also been some great TV shows such as "The Magician" with Bill Bixby and even "Bullshit" with Penn & Teller. And who could forget the star turns by Tony Curtis and, 30 years later, Paul Michael Glaser, both as the Great Houdini? But the most enduring name in magic is probably the one that few of us has ever actually accessed in person: The Magic Castle in Hollywood. Milt Larsen founded the private club for magicians some 50 years ago and it is still thriving today as a place you might run into magicians or magic fans, such as Steve Martin and Neil Patrick Harris. Just this week, word leaked out that a major motion picture about the Magic Castle will be directed by McG. Fan of Syfy's Haven? Go behind the scenes with producer/writer Charles Ardai! (Interview)
In addition to being the co-founder and editor of the Hard Case Crime imprint, Ardai is also a consulting producer to "Haven," the wicked cool supernatural drama on the Syfy network. It stars the beautiful and haunting Emily Rose -- who you might recognize from HBO's "John from Cincinnati" or ABC's "Brothers and Sisters," as "Audrey Parker," Lucas Bryant as "Sheriff Nathan Wuornos," and, as bad boy Duke Crocker, "Six Feet Under" veteran Eric Balfour. (Balfour incidentally, was a guest on Mr. Media late in the first season of "Haven," and it's a great interview if you haven't heard it yet.) Howard Cruse's newest raid on the archives is The Other Sides of Howard Cruse. It includes a big helping of his beloved Barefootz strip—which means cockroaches, frogs, sexually frustrated Dolly and is-he-or-isn't-he Headrack. Then we get introduced to Shearwell the sheep, the squirrels of Tops & Button, Big Marvy, and yes, even "The Nightmares of Little Lulu." There is plenty of the underground, stoner, sex-starved humor for which he is famous, as well as some straight, above-ground comics that you could probably show your grandmother.
